Ryearch was appointed to undertake an extensive refurbishment of Plymouth Market.

Site Context: Previously known as the Pannier Market, Plymouth Market is a high-profile building and an important civic asset.  Acknowledged as one of the most unique structures in the south west, the wave like roof profile and the building’s geometry have achieved grade II listed building status and a Civic Trust award.

Plymouth Market gets over a million visitors each year, making it one of the busiest markets in the country.  The stalls and perimeter shops support 200+ jobs and the market is based within a busy commercial shopping area.

In order to meet the aim of making the market a ‘major focus for the regeneration of the West End’, a comprehensive refurbishment plan was devised.

Works: The extensive refurbishment works include:

• recovering the high level, concrete “wavey” roof
• insulating and recovering the flat roofs
• installing PV solar panels
• installing a platform lift
• additional ventilation to the fishmongers area
• fire suppression systems to each of the six cafés
• full internal redecoration
• new floor finish to the main hall
• replacing windows, rooflights and northlight curtain walling
• remodelling the entrances
• staff toilet refurbishment
• new internal lighting
• converting day stalls to permanent stalls
• refurbishment of four washrooms
• refurbishment of the market manager’s office

The market remained open for the duration of the project, with works taking place in a live environment.  Disruption to the stall holders, shop owners, market staff and customers was kept to a minimum to reduce impact on trading.

We successfully delivered the Plymouth Market redevelopment on schedule and to budget.  The project secured two Highly Commended awards for Best Conversion or Conservation Project and Best Commercial Project at the 2017 Abercrombie Award
