Mount Wise Community Primary School, Plymouth

Construction of an independent building with six classrooms, associated playgrounds, sports pitches, walkways, canopies and external works.

The design of the building and detailing had to balance aesthetics against robust design giving consideration for heavy use and potential vandalism.

There was also a requirement to minimise the buildings’ carbon footprint and where possible renewable material sources were incorporated into the works, for example the timber frame walling used to form the principal circulation corridor.

The contract required considerable liaison with the school to complete the fit out and furnishings to their requirements and it was this process that helped eliminate a number of future user and ergonomic problems that could have arisen.  We also minimised the associated cost on budget due to abnormal ground conditions.

The contract was a resounding success and completed on time.

The project won the ‘best filled gabions’ award at the 2012 LABC Building Excellence Awards.
